Dorian Jackson Obituary: 21-Year-Old Dies After Drowning While Trying to Rescue Sister at Lake Norman, North Carolina
A young life has been lost in a heartbreaking attempt to protect someone he loved. Dorian Jackson, 21, of Greensboro, North Carolina, and a student at North Carolina A&T, died Saturday night after drowning in Lake Norman while attempting to help his sister after her kayak overturned.
According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, officers responded to the boating incident at approximately 7 p.m. near Hearthstone Court in Terrell.
Investigators said Dorian’s sister had capsized her kayak roughly 30 yards from a nearby home’s dock and was struggling in the water. She was wearing a life jacket when Dorian entered the water to help her.
Dorian attempted to assist his sister onto his kayak, but he was not wearing a life jacket himself. As the rescue unfolded, neighbors also entered the water and helped bring Dorian’s sister safely back to shore.
During the effort to rescue her, Dorian went underwater and did not resurface.
His death has left family, friends, fellow students, and members of the community grieving a young man whose final moments were spent trying to help his sister. His actions have become a deeply painful part of a tragedy that has forever changed those closest to him.
