Nakia Kelley Obituary, TEXAS CITY, TEXAS — A 26-year-old man has been arrested and formally charged in connection with a shooting that left one woman dead and another person injured in Texas City on Monday afternoon, according to the Texas City Police Department.
Authorities identified the suspect as Kristian McMurrin, who was taken into custody following an investigation into a shooting reported in the 3400 block of 9th Avenue North.
Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 2:45 p.m. on June 23, 2026. When officers arrived at the scene, they located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel transported both victims to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. One of the victims, identified as 25-year-old Nakia Kelley of Texas City, later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The second victim survived the shooting and remains under medical care. Authorities have not publicly released the identity or current condition of that individual.
Following investigative efforts, detectives identified Kristian McMurrin as the primary suspect in the case. He was located and taken into custody without incident later the same day.
The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office has since accepted charges of Murder and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon against McMurrin. He was booked into the Texas City Jail and remains in custody pending further court proceedings. Authorities have not released details regarding a possible motive or what led up to the shooting.
As with all criminal cases, officials emphasized that the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to gather evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
