Randolph Mantooth, the iconic actor best known for playing firefighter and paramedic John Gage on the 1970s TV show Emergency!, died on July 9, 2026, at age 80. He passed away in Ventura, California, from pneumonia complications following a prolonged battle with multiple cancers.
His breakout role in 1972 as paramedic Johnny Gage, alongside real-life friend and co-star Kevin Tighe (who played Roy DeSoto), is widely credited with bringing the emerging paramedic profession to public attention and inspiring generations of firefighters and EMTs.
Born Randy DeRoy Mantooth on September 19, 1945, in Sacramento, California, he performed most of his own stunts on Emergency!. Following the show’s six-season run, Mantooth went on to establish a prolific television career, notably starring in numerous daytime soap operas, including Loving, General Hospital, and One Life to Live.
