Dennis Hastert Obituary, Death – Former U.S. House Speaker Dies at 84 in Illinois

Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has died at the age of 84, marking the end of a long political career that took him from Illinois state politics to the highest leadership position in the House of Representatives.

Hastert died over the weekend at his home in Illinois from natural causes, according to Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell.

Hastert served as Speaker of the House from 1999 through 2007 and remains the longest-serving Republican to hold the position. He represented Illinois in Congress for two decades before leaving the House in 2007.

Dennis Hastert’s Political Career

Born in Aurora, Illinois, in 1942, Hastert began his career as a teacher and wrestling coach before entering politics. He later served in the Illinois General Assembly and was elected to the U.S. House in 1986, representing Illinois’ 14th Congressional District.

His rise in Washington eventually led to the speakership after Newt Gingrich stepped down in 1998. Hastert took the House gavel in January 1999 and remained speaker until Republicans lost control of the chamber following the 2006 elections.

During his time as speaker, Hastert worked closely with President George W. Bush’s administration on major legislation, including tax cuts and an expansion of Medicare prescription drug benefits. He also presided over the House during significant national events, including President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial.

Later Years and Legal Case

After leaving Congress, Hastert worked as a lobbyist and consultant. His public career later became overshadowed by a federal investigation into large cash withdrawals that were connected to payments intended to conceal past sexual abuse of teenage boys whom he had coached.

Hastert pleaded guilty in 2015 to federal banking violations. During the resulting court proceedings, he acknowledged sexually abusing young athletes during his years as a high school teacher and wrestling coach. He was sentenced in 2016 to 15 months in federal prison and served more than a year.

The revelations fundamentally changed how Hastert’s political career was viewed and became a defining part of his later public record.

Death at 84

Hastert died at his Illinois home over the weekend, with the Kendall County coroner confirming natural causes. No further medical details were released in the initial announcement.

Hastert is survived by his wife, Jean, and their two adult sons, according to reporting by the Associated Press.

Dennis Hastert’s death closes a complicated chapter in the history of the U.S. House, from his rise as a relatively little-known Illinois politician to becoming the longest-serving Republican speaker and, later, facing a federal conviction and imprisonment connected to the concealment of his past sexual abuse.
