Newcastle Knights Farewell Crash: 10 Injured After Car Hits Crowd in Wallsend, Three Children Among Victims
NEWCASTLE, Australia — Ten people, including three children, were injured Saturday morning after a vehicle struck a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters gathered along a roadway in Wallsend for the team’s farewell before the NRL Grand Final.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on October 3, 2026, near Newcastle Link Road and Transfield Avenue. Hundreds of fans had reportedly gathered along the road to support the Newcastle Knights as the team bus prepared to leave for Sydney.
According to the preliminary account, an 18-year-old provisional driver allegedly lost control of a sedan after driving erratically. The vehicle then veered from the roadway and entered the group of supporters.
Ten Pedestrians Injured
Emergency services responded to the scene with a major medical operation involving 10 ambulance crews and four rescue helicopters.
Ten pedestrians were treated for injuries before being transported to nearby hospitals. Three of those injured were children.
Among the seriously injured were a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man, both of whom were reported to be in critical condition.
The incident disrupted what had been a large gathering of supporters celebrating and wishing the Newcastle Knights well as the team travelled toward the National Rugby League Grand Final.
Driver Arrested and Charged
New South Wales Police arrested the 18-year-old driver at the scene. Officers reportedly intervened after an angry crowd gathered around the vehicle and its occupants.
The driver was subsequently charged with multiple traffic offenses, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. His provisional driver’s licence was also suspended.
Police said preliminary inquiries indicated that the incident resulted from alleged erratic driving and a loss of control rather than an intentional act or terrorism.
Police Investigation Continues
Newcastle Link Road was closed in both directions following the crash while specialist investigators examined the scene.
Collision reconstruction officers are conducting forensic mapping and crash analysis as authorities work to establish the precise circumstances that led to the vehicle entering the crowd.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further information about the victims’ conditions, the driver’s circumstances and the circumstances surrounding the crash may be released as inquiries continue.
The incident has cast a shadow over the Newcastle Knights’ farewell gathering, with supporters and the wider Newcastle community now focused on the recovery of those injured.
