Some people enter our lives and leave behind memories. Others leave a legacy so meaningful that their presence continues to live on in the hearts of those they touched. Today, we remember Dwayne Antonio Harvey, 59, of Detroit, lovingly known to many as “Teach Harvey.”
Dwayne was more than a teacher. He was an educator, mentor, role model, and source of encouragement to countless young people who had the opportunity to learn from him at Oak Park High School.
Through his dedication, patience, compassion, and willingness to encourage others, Dwayne helped students not only learn in the classroom but also grow in confidence and believe in their own potential. For many, his influence extended beyond academics, leaving an impression that would remain long after their time in school.
On September 17, 2026, the community suffered a heartbreaking loss when Dwayne was killed in a fatal crash at Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway.
At the time of the crash, Dwayne was working evenings as an Uber driver. What may have begun as an ordinary evening ultimately became a devastating moment for his family, friends, former students, and members of the wider community.
The loss of someone who dedicated so much of his life to guiding others is especially painful. Dwayne’s passing leaves behind not only grieving loved ones but also former students and community members who will remember the lessons, encouragement, and kindness he shared.
Though his life has come to an untimely end, the legacy of “Teach Harvey” will continue through the people he influenced. Every student he encouraged, every lesson he shared, and every life he touched represents a lasting part of the legacy he leaves behind.
