Douglas Emge Obituary, Cause of Death: 62-Year-Old Pilot Killed in DeKalb County Plane Crash in Alabama
WHITTON, Alabama — A quiet Tuesday morning ended in tragedy for the Whitton community with the death of 62-year-old Douglas Emge, who was killed when a small airplane crashed in a wooded area of DeKalb County.
According to authorities, Emge was the pilot and only person aboard the single-engine Van’s RV-4 aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane crashed near Albertville at approximately 6:50 a.m. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported that the aircraft went down near the 4700 block of County Road 3, behind the Whitton water tank.
Deputies and local first responders were dispatched to the crash site, where one fatality was confirmed. DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Posey also confirmed that one person died in the crash. Emge was later identified as the pilot who lost his life.
The FAA responded to the scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board was en route to investigate. Officials have not yet released a cause for the crash, and the circumstances surrounding what happened remain under investigation. Authorities asked the public to stay away from the crash area while investigators worked at the scene.
