Derek Phillips Obituary: Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band Member Dies After Cardiac Arrest at Football Game
The University of Iowa community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Derek Phillips, a talented musician and beloved member of the Hawkeye Marching Band whose life was tragically cut short following a sudden cardiac arrest during the Hawkeyes’ season-opening football game.
Phillips, a third-year University of Iowa student from Dubuque, suffered the medical emergency on September 5, shortly before the Hawkeye Marching Band was scheduled to perform its halftime show at Kinnick Stadium.
According to his family, Derek collapsed in the heat and experienced sudden cardiac arrest. He was transported to University of Iowa Health Care, where doctors determined that the resulting brain damage was severe.
After days of intensive medical care, Derek’s family made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support. His passing has since left classmates, fellow musicians, friends and members of the Hawkeye community grieving.
The Hawkeye Marching Band later confirmed Derek’s death, remembering him as its mellophone section leader and a cherished member of the School of Music horn studio.
Those who knew Derek have described him through the lasting connections he made as a student, musician and friend. His involvement with the marching band placed him at the heart of a community built around music, teamwork and shared experiences.
