AIRVAULT, France — France’s film and fashion communities are mourning the sudden deaths of film producer Nicolas Altmayer and Dior public relations executive Mathilde Favier, a couple who built influential careers in two of the country’s most prominent creative industries.
Altmayer, 61, and Favier, 57, died Monday afternoon in a road crash in Airvault, in France’s Deux-Sèvres region, according to authorities. Their deaths have prompted an outpouring of grief from colleagues and figures across French cinema and international fashion.
The fatal collision occurred at about 4 p.m. on a departmental road. According to Nicolas Leclainche, deputy prosecutor at the Niort prosecutor’s office, the couple’s vehicle collided with a heavy goods vehicle traveling in the opposite direction while their car was overtaking another vehicle.
An investigation has been opened for involuntary manslaughter by a driver as authorities work to establish the precise circumstances that led to the collision.
The crash brought an abrupt end to the lives of two people whose professional influence stretched across French cinema, luxury fashion, celebrity culture and the arts.

The accident happened in the afternoon in Airvault, a commune in the Deux-Sèvres department of western France.
According to prosecutors, Altmayer and Favier were traveling in their vehicle when it struck a heavy goods vehicle coming from the opposite direction as they were overtaking another vehicle. The impact proved fatal for both occupants of the car.
The circumstances surrounding the maneuver are now the subject of an official investigation.
