Hapai Ropata Clyde Otene, 33, Obituary: Auckland Man Fatally Shot by Police After Sylvia Park Incident
The family of Hapai Ropata Clyde Otene, 33, is mourning his death after he was fatally shot by police outside Sylvia Park shopping mall in Auckland following a police pursuit that triggered a major emergency response and lockdowns in parts of the busy retail centre.
Otene was identified as the man who died during the incident on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The events unfolded after police responded to reports involving a stolen firearm and a vehicle pursuit. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing armed police and emergency personnel surrounding the area as officers worked to secure the scene.
According to his family, Otene was a father of five who had been with his partner for 17 years. He was also reportedly the second eldest of nine siblings. His family is now facing the painful loss of a father, partner, brother, and loved one.
Police have said the events began after a rifle was reportedly stolen from Gun City in Penrose. A white Suzuki Swift was later involved in a crash near Sylvia Park before a police pursuit developed. The situation eventually culminated in a confrontation outside the shopping centre, where Otene was fatally shot by officers.
Parts of Sylvia Park were placed into lockdown as armed police responded to what authorities described as a serious and rapidly developing situation. The presence of numerous police vehicles and emergency personnel drew significant attention as officers secured the area.
Information released following Otene’s death also highlighted his previous involvement with the criminal justice system. He had four previous convictions for firearms offences and was sentenced in 2023 to four years in prison for aggravated robbery.
After his release in 2025, Otene was convicted over the theft of goods valued at more than NZ$1,000 from Rebel Sport. At the time of the Sylvia Park incident, he was serving a sentence involving community detention and supervision.
It was also reported that Otene was facing a charge connected to the alleged taking of a Subaru Legacy and had appeared in court less than a month before his death.
Corrections New Zealand confirmed that Otene was subject to community detention and supervision. His sentence included a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew, with electronic monitoring used to verify that he was at his home address during those hours. Corrections said he was not in breach of the curfew when the Sylvia Park incident occurred.
The circumstances surrounding the pursuit and fatal shooting remain under investigation. Authorities are expected to examine the actions of police, witness accounts, available video footage, and other evidence as they work to establish the full sequence of events.
For Otene’s family, however, the investigation is unfolding alongside profound personal grief. Whatever the circumstances surrounding the incident, they are now mourning someone who was part of their family and who leaves behind five children, a longtime partner, siblings, and other loved ones.
