Finlay Tarling, 19, Obituary: British Cyclist Dies in Tragic Volta a Portugal Crash During Stage 8 in Portugal
British road cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, has died following a serious accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal 2026 on Friday, August 14.
Race organisers confirmed Tarling’s death after the incident, which occurred during the stage between Melgaço and Fafe. Local reports said the accident involved a car travelling on the wrong side of the road in the Ponte de Lima region.
Emergency services attended Tarling at the scene, but the young cyclist died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Finlay Tarling Remembered
A native of Wales, Tarling was a member of the NSN Development Team and the younger brother of Olympic cyclist Josh Tarling, the European 2023 time-trial champion.
The Volta a Portugal organisation and Portuguese Cycling Federation expressed their condolences to Tarling’s family, teammates, friends and everyone connected with him.
The tragedy led race organisers to neutralise the remainder of Stage 8. The peloton subsequently completed the route to Fafe together, with the race continuing under neutralised conditions.
