Chardon Suicide Death: Police Confirm Tragic Loss of Life After Mental Health Crisis on Myra Drive
The Chardon Police Department has released additional information regarding a major police response that occurred on the evening of July 23, 2026, in the 400 block of Myra Drive within the Chardon Park Estates community. Authorities have confirmed that the incident stemmed from a mental health crisis and resulted in the tragic loss of one individual.
According to police, officers were dispatched to a residence at approximately 9:40 p.m. after receiving reports that an individual was sending threatening text messages indicating suicidal intentions. As officers arrived at the scene, they reportedly heard a single gunshot coming from inside the home.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Chardon officers immediately requested assistance from the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Geauga County Drone Team. Law enforcement personnel quickly established a secure perimeter around the residence while attempting to make contact with the individual inside. Due to the uncertain nature of the situation and concerns for public safety, a significant police presence remained in the area throughout the response.
After securing the scene and entering the residence, officers discovered an individual who had died from what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of family members. Officials stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
Police emphasized that the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to residents or the broader community. Following the conclusion of the response, officers cleared the scene and normal activity resumed in the neighborhood.
In a public statement, Chardon Police Chief Scott Niehus expressed sympathy for those affected by the tragedy.
“This is a heartbreaking outcome, and our deepest condolences go to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”
Chief Niehus also asked community members to respect the privacy of the family as they navigate an incredibly difficult period of grief.
