T. Denny Sanford Obituary: Billionaire Philanthropist and First PREMIER Bank Founder Dies at 90, Leaving $4 Billion Legacy

T. Denny Sanford South Dakota, and communities across the nation are mourning the passing of Thomas “Denny” Sanford, visionary businessman, billionaire philanthropist, and founder of First PREMIER Bank. Sanford died peacefully on July 18, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on December 23, 1935, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to William and Edith (Hill) Sanford, Denny dedicated his life to building businesses, supporting charitable causes, and improving the lives of millions through extraordinary philanthropy.

A Life Shaped by Early Hardship

Sanford often spoke about the profound impact of losing his mother to breast cancer when he was just four years old. He began working in his father’s garment shop at the age of eight, experiences that helped shape his strong work ethic and lifelong commitment to helping others.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1958 with a degree in psychology, Sanford built a successful career in sales, marketing, and materials distribution. He later founded Contech, Inc., a Minneapolis-based manufacturer of sealants, coatings, and adhesives, before selling the company and embarking on a new chapter in banking.

Building a Financial Institution

In 1986, Sanford purchased a bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, renaming it First PREMIER Bank. He later expanded into the credit card industry with PREMIER Bankcard, helping transform the organization into one of the nation’s strongest financial institutions.

His business success enabled him to devote much of his later life to philanthropy, a mission that became his defining legacy.

A Legacy of Philanthropy

Over the course of his lifetime, Denny Sanford donated more than $4 billion to charitable organizations, making him one of America’s most generous philanthropists.

His contributions transformed healthcare, education, scientific research, workforce development, the arts, and children’s services throughout South Dakota and across the United States.

Among his most notable gifts was a historic $400 million donation in 2007 to Sioux Valley Health System, which was subsequently renamed Sanford Health in recognition of his generosity.

His philanthropy also helped establish and expand numerous institutions and initiatives, including:

Edith Sanford Breast Center
Sanford Children’s Hospital
Sanford Imagenetics
Sanford Health’s Virtual Care Initiative
Build Dakota Scholarship Program
Freedom Scholarship Program
Denny Sanford PREMIER Center
Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF)
Crazy Horse Memorial
Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine
Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Medical Discovery Institute
Sanford Harmony and Inspire Programs
Sanford College of Education

His charitable giving earned national recognition, including being named among the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s 50 most generous philanthropists and receiving the Horatio Alger Association Distinguished American Award.

A Man of Humility and Purpose

Despite his remarkable success, Sanford was widely remembered for his humility, compassion, and desire to inspire others through generosity. He often encouraged people to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and lived by his personal motto:

“Aspire to inspire before you expire.”

Away from business and philanthropy, Sanford enjoyed golf, sailing, and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his brother, Charles “Chuck” Sanford (Nancy); his sons, Scott (Rada) and Bill (Andrea); and three beloved grandchildren.

Funeral Arrangements

The family has announced that arrangements for a private family service followed by a community celebration of Denny Sanford’s life are pending.

In lieu of flowers, plants, or memorial gifts, the family requests that those wishing to honor Denny’s memory make a donation to the charity of their choice, reflecting the generosity that defined his life.

Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the Sanford family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by Thomas “Denny” Sanford’s extraordinary life and legacy. His vision, generosity, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others will continue to inspire generations to come. May he rest in eternal peace.
