According to Wilmington police, the shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. inside the hospital and is being investigated as a workplace-related incident involving employees.
One of the victims died from their injuries, Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos confirmed. The second victim survived and was hospitalized, though officials have not released their condition or identities at this time.
Authorities identified the suspect as Alijah Hayden, who is believed to have been a temporary employee at the facility. Police said the investigation is ongoing as they work to confirm details surrounding his role and the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Law enforcement officials said the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The hospital was placed on lockdown during the search for the suspect but has since been lifted.
Officials said officers immediately secured the building and conducted a floor-by-floor search while urging the public to avoid the area.
Wilmington Mayor John Carney expressed condolences to hospital staff, describing the event as a “terrible day” for employees who were forced to shelter in place during the emergency response. He also praised law enforcement officers for their quick action and bravery during the incident.
Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer condemned the violence, saying the tragedy is a reminder that “no one is immune from the devastation of gun violence,” and emphasized the importance of safety in workplaces, schools, and healthcare facilities.
