Evan & Dyquan Hykeem-Jamaal Obituary, Death; A devastating overnight crash in Richland County has claimed the lives of two young men following a head-on collision that has left families grieving and authorities searching for answers.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the fatal incident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday along Interstate 26 near mile marker 107.5, in the Bush River Road area. Investigators say a 2023 Hyundai sedan was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 2018 Nissan SUV that was properly heading west.
The violent impact resulted in the deaths of both drivers at the scene.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office later identified the victims as 23-year-old Josiah J. Evan of Columbia and 31-year-old Dyquan Hykeem-Jamaal of Lexington.
Authorities confirmed that Evan was driving the Hyundai sedan in the wrong direction at the time of the crash. The reason for the wrong-way travel has not yet been determined, and officials say the investigation remains ongoing.
Hykeem-Jamaal, who was driving the Nissan SUV, had no chance to avoid the collision. Both vehicles sustained catastrophic damage, and emergency responders pronounced the two men dead at the scene. No other passengers were involved.
The tragedy has left two families mourning sudden and profound losses, as loved ones struggle to come to terms with lives cut short in such a violent and unexpected manner.
Officials continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash, hoping to determine what caused the Hyundai to enter the interstate in the wrong direction and prevent similar incidents in the future.
