Chris Ober Obituary, McDonough, GA: FOX Sports “MLB iPad Guy” Dies After Cancer Battle

Chris Ober, a FOX Sports employee known to baseball fans as the MLB “iPad Guy,” has reportedly passed away following a battle with cancer.

Ober was closely associated with FOX Sports’ baseball production operations and became recognizable to fans through his work around Major League Baseball broadcasts. He was also known as the “MLB iPad man,” a nickname connected to a marketing campaign that began in 2015 and featured him carrying an iPad during MLB events.

His connection to FOX Sports extended beyond the on-screen novelty. Ober worked with the network’s production team during MLB playoffs and traveled with crews to major baseball events. A 2023 profile by the South Boston Trial Foundation described him as an 11-year brain-tumor survivor at the time and highlighted his work with the FOX Sports production team.

According to that profile, Ober was initially diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme in 2012. He experienced a recurrence and underwent treatment while continuing to remain involved with his work. In 2022, he faced a second recurrence that required additional surgery and an extended recovery, including time in a coma, intensive care and rehabilitation.

Despite the challenges, Ober returned to work and was described as “thriving post diagnosis” in 2023. He had traveled to New York for the Belmont Stakes and hoped to continue working with the MLB playoffs. The FOX Sports crews he worked with were described as a second family, reflecting the close relationships he developed during his years in sports production.

News of Ober’s reported passing is expected to prompt tributes from colleagues, baseball fans and members of the FOX Sports community. His story extended beyond his role at baseball games, representing years of perseverance while living with a serious illness.

As additional details about his death and funeral arrangements emerge, family members, friends and colleagues may provide further information about his life, career and legacy.
