Florida Everglades Airboat Collision: One Dead, Another Critically Injured in Broward County Crash

WEST BROWARD, Fla. — One person was killed and another critically injured Friday evening after two airboats collided in a remote area of the Florida Everglades.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at approximately 6:19 p.m. on October 2, 2026, following reports of a marine collision in a marshland area south of Interstate 75 and west of U.S. Route 27.

The remote location and dense vegetation created significant challenges for rescuers. Because the crash site was difficult to reach by conventional ground vehicles, authorities relied on aviation resources to locate the victims and conduct the rescue operation.

A Broward Sheriff’s Office law enforcement helicopter was used to survey the area and identify the precise location of the collision. A Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Air Rescue crew subsequently carried out a specialized hoist operation to remove the critically injured survivor from the marsh.

One Person Killed in Collision
The surviving victim, a man, was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood under a Level 1 trauma alert for treatment of his critical injuries.

A second person involved in the collision was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Authorities have not yet publicly identified either victim. Their names are expected to be released after formal identification procedures and notification of their families.

FWC and Sheriff’s Office Investigate
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Broward Sheriff’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Investigators are examining several factors that could have contributed to the crash, including conditions in the remote wetland environment, the speed of the airboats and navigation-related circumstances.

Because the collision occurred in an isolated marshland waterway, investigators are expected to reconstruct the events leading up to the impact as they work to determine what caused the two vessels to collide.

Authorities have not yet released a final determination regarding the cause of the crash.

Investigation Continues
The fatal incident has drawn attention from boating and outdoor communities across South Florida, particularly because of the challenges associated with navigating remote wetlands.

Officials are asking anyone who may have information about airboat activity in the area around the time of the collision to contact the Broward Sheriff’s Office or the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline.

Additional information about the surviving victim’s condition, the identities of those involved and the official findings of the investigation may be released as authorities complete their work.
