Melanie Rivera Avilés Identified After Fatal Shooting on PR-102 in San Germán, Puerto Rico

SAN GERMÁN, Puerto Rico — Authorities have identified a 38-year-old woman who was fatally shot along PR-102 in San Germán early Tuesday morning, August 25, as Melanie Rivera Avilés, a resident of the municipality.

The deadly shooting was reported at approximately 2:00 a.m. near kilometer 36.3 of PR-102, in the Minillas neighborhood, near the former Villa Chelín.

According to police, officers responding to reports of gunshots discovered Rivera Avilés lying beside the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. She was found face down, wearing a black sleeveless blouse and blue denim shorts. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Investigators reportedly recovered more than 25 shell casings of different calibers from the area, which are now being examined as part of the investigation.

The Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC) of Mayagüez is leading the case, with prosecutors assisting investigators as they work to establish what happened and identify those responsible.

Police initially activated the femicide investigation protocol because the victim was a woman. However, the director of the Mayagüez CIC later indicated that investigators currently believe the killing may have been related to controlled substances rather than gender-based violence. Authorities have not confirmed a motive, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Investigators are conducting interviews and reviewing possible security-camera footage from nearby businesses in hopes of reconstructing the events before the shooting and determining who was involved.

No arrests have been reported at this time.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence and information that could lead to an arrest in the fatal shooting of Melanie Rivera Avilés.

This report reflects information available from authorities at the time of publication. The investigation remains ongoing, and the motive has not been officially established.
