Vic Morrow Obituary: Actor, Renee Shinn Chen, and Myca Dinh Le Remembered 44 Years After Tragic ‘Twilight Zone’ Helicopter Crash
On July 23, 1982, actor Vic Morrow and two child actors, Renee Shinn Chen and Myca Dinh Le, were tragically killed in a helicopter accident during the filming of Twilight Zone: The Movie in California.
Morrow, 53, and the children, ages six and seven, were filming a Vietnam War battle scene in which they were supposed to be running from a pursuing helicopter. During the scene, special-effects explosions caused the low-flying helicopter to lose control, resulting in a catastrophic crash that claimed the lives of all three victims.
The accident occurred on the film’s final scheduled day of shooting and shocked Hollywood and audiences around the world. It remains one of the most tragic incidents in film production history.
Following the accident, Twilight Zone co-director John Landis and four other crew members, including the special-effects coordinator and the helicopter pilot, were charged with involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors argued that safety regulations, particularly those involving child actors, had been violated. The defense maintained that the crash was an unforeseeable accident.
After a lengthy and emotional 10-month trial, a jury acquitted all five defendants in 1987. The families of the victims later filed lawsuits against Landis, Warner Brothers, and producer Steven Spielberg, which were settled for undisclosed amounts.

Vic Morrow was a respected actor known for his roles in numerous television shows and films, including The Blackboard Jungle (1955) and The Bad News Bears (1976). He was also the father of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.
