Authorities with the Richmond Police Department said officers were called at approximately 5:11 p.m. to the 500 block of Tredegar Street after reports that a person had gone underwater in the river. Emergency crews with the Richmond Fire Department Water Rescue Team quickly responded and launched a search in the swift-moving waters.

RPD Swift Water Rescue units located Rukunuzzaman in the James River and brought him to the north bank, where first responders immediately began lifesaving efforts. Despite their urgent attempts and rapid transport to a nearby hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries, leaving family and loved ones devastated by the sudden and tragic loss.

Officials stated that the Medical Examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death. However, investigators with the Richmond Police Department’s Major Crimes Division have confirmed that, at this time, the incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
