Saratoga Horse Accident Today, SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK — A frightening multi-horse spill unfolded on opening day of the 2026 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course, leaving Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano hospitalized for precautionary X-rays after a dramatic incident during the Wild Applause Stakes.
The accident occurred in the eighth race of the day on Friday at Saratoga Race Course when the field reached the top of the stretch on the inner turf course. According to race reports, I Love Giraffes, ridden by Paco Lopez, stumbled and fell while making a move toward the lead, triggering a chain reaction that brought down several runners.
The incident also involved Lovely Grey, ridden by Dylan Davis, Paris Carver, ridden by Javier Castellano, and Smexy, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione. All four jockeys were unseated during the spill as horses and riders went down in quick succession, prompting an immediate emergency response from track officials, veterinarians, and medical personnel.
Race officials confirmed that all four jockeys received prompt medical attention on the track. Castellano was placed on a stretcher and transported to Saratoga Hospital after being evaluated at the track’s first aid station. He was reported to be alert and conscious, and able to move all extremities before being transferred for further evaluation.
The other riders — Paco Lopez, Dylan Davis, and Tyler Gaffalione — were able to walk away from the incident under their own power after being assessed by on-site medical teams. As a precaution, all jockeys involved were later removed from their remaining rides for the day.

Despite the dramatic interruption, racing continued later in the day after officials cleared the track. The Wild Applause Stakes was ultimately won by To a Flame, ridden by Jose Ortiz, who avoided the spill and secured victory in the first stakes race of the Saratoga meet.
