Joel Bernhard Obituary, THERESA, WISCONSIN — The Theresa community is mourning the loss of Joel Bernhard, the beloved founder of Confections For Any Occasion, who passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the age of 47. Bernhard died at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac while surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, faith, generosity, and exceptional craftsmanship that touched countless lives throughout Wisconsin.
Known for his award-winning chocolates, warm personality, and unwavering commitment to his community, Bernhard was much more than a talented confectioner. Customers, friends, and fellow community members remember him as someone who greeted everyone with kindness, generously shared both his time and his creations, and made every visitor feel welcome. Following news of his passing, heartfelt tributes poured in from customers, local families, and community organizations, all reflecting on the lasting impact he made through his business and his compassionate spirit.
Born on November 8, 1978, to Ron and Karen (Zedler) Bernhard, Joel overcame extraordinary challenges from an early age. After developing a brain tumor at just two years old, he underwent multiple surgeries that ultimately resulted in the loss of his eyesight. Despite these obstacles, he embraced life with remarkable determination and often inspired others with his personal philosophy: “It’s not what you can’t do, it’s what you can do.” He attended Franklin Elementary School in Oshkosh, where he learned braille and mobility skills before graduating from Lomira High School, where he actively participated in band, 4-H, forensics, FFA, and the Fond du Lac County Fair.
A lifelong member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, Bernhard’s Christian faith remained at the center of his life. After graduating from Moraine Park Technical College with a degree in Culinary Arts, he transformed his passion for baking and chocolate-making into a successful career. In 2001, he opened Confections For Any Occasion, a specialty candy shop that became a cherished destination for residents and visitors alike. Even after a devastating fire forced the business to close temporarily in 2024, Bernhard remained determined to rebuild, encouraged by overwhelming support from his staff and the Theresa community.
Throughout his life, Bernhard faced numerous medical challenges, including multiple surgeries and both liver and kidney transplants. Despite these hardships, he remained closely involved in operating his business, offering guidance to his staff even during hospital stays. His perseverance, optimism, and dedication earned the admiration of family, friends, customers, healthcare professionals, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Joel is survived by his mother, Karen Bernhard; his brother, Mike (Tammy) Bernhard; nieces Samantha (Aidric) Mertens and Sabrina Bernhard (fiancé Brandon Evans); along with many extended family members, friends, and an entire community that cherished him. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Bernhard; his sister, Angela Bernhard; his maternal grandparents, Lester and Bette Zedler; his paternal grandparents, Carl and Gladys Bernhard; and his uncle, Ron Schwenk.
A Christian Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Theresa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Theresa Fire Department, or the Theresa Historical Society. Joel Bernhard will be remembered not only for his extraordinary confections, but also for his unwavering faith, remarkable courage, generous heart, and the countless lives he brightened with kindness.
