Crystal Veronica Rankin Arrested: Substitute Teacher at Oak Grove High School Arrested in Student Sex Case – A Jefferson County substitute teacher has been arrested following allegations involving inappropriate sexual contact with a student, according to jail records and school officials.
Authorities identified the suspect as Crystal Veronica Rankin, 43, who is charged with school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student, according to Jefferson County Jail records.
Investigators said the alleged incident occurred on May 11, though additional details surrounding the case have not been released. Officials have not provided information regarding the student involved due to privacy protections.
Rankin was a substitute teacher at Oak Grove High School at the time of the allegations.
Jail records show she was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 2:08 p.m. on Wednesday and released approximately 40 minutes later at 2:48 p.m. Her bond for the felony charge was set at $30,000.
Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin confirmed the district is aware of the allegations and is cooperating with law enforcement and investigators. In a statement to AL.com, he said the system’s “primary concern is the well-being and safety of our students.”
Gonsoulin added that, upon learning of the allegations, school administrators immediately contacted the third-party agency responsible for staffing substitute teachers to ensure Rankin would no longer be assigned to any school campus.
He also noted that the district understands the allegations relate to an off-campus incident and emphasized that, due to the ongoing investigation and student privacy concerns, the district cannot provide further comment at this time.
Authorities said the investigation remains active as they continue to gather information and review the circumstances surrounding the case.
