Dr. Lawrence “Larry” Butler Obituary: Respected Veterinarian and Horseman Remembered – Dr Lawrence Alexander Butler (Larry) Obituary, Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Butler, aged 75, found peace following a battle with ALS, with loved ones by his side.
The son of loving parents John (JD) and Cairine (Toots) Butler (nee Morin), Larry grew up in New Liskeard, ON where he developed a love for sports, the farm, and animals. His passion for animals, developed in part through 4H, led him to the University of Guelph where he studied Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1974. He furthered his education at Cornell University via surgical residency.
Over his many years at the Ottawa Valley Large Animal Clinic Larry never stopped learning. This pursuit of knowledge, as well as his dedication to both patients and clients led to him becoming a highly regarded large animal veterinarian with expertise in surgery, equine lameness, and reproduction.
An avid horseman, Larry bred, raised, and raced standardbreds at local tracks in Eastern Ontario as well as across the province and New York in stakes races. Among his favorites were Kendra Joy (Kenny) and Warp Speed (Rascal).
While many knew Larry through his work and horse pursuits, he was most importantly a beloved father to Jeffrey Butler (Leeanne) and Andrew Butler (Jacqueline) – teaching by example and enjoying family time in the rink, on the slopes and golf course, and at the farm. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Ethan and Devon Butler and Grayson and Maeve Butler whom he loved very much and who brought so many smiles to his face. Larry is survived by his sisters Karen Bruens and Jill Butler (Murray) as well as nieces Kerri and Ginny Farion and nephews Shawn and Christopher Farion. His friends will miss his dry humour and loyalty.
Friends and family are encouraged to come together to remember and celebrate Larry’s life on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 2 – 5pm at Thee Farm (4100 County Rd 43, Kemptville, ON) with a Eulogy at 3pm. Those who wish may make memorial donations to the ALS Society or a cause that is close to your heart.
